Information

Goal
This ISC Community Stage will provide a forum for the Open OnDemand community to exchange experiences, best practices, and engage with each other.

Topic Overview
Developed by the Ohio Supercomputer Center and funded by the National Science Foundation, Open OnDemand (openondemand.org) is an open-source portal that enables web-based access to HPC services. Clients can manage files and jobs, create and share apps, and run GUI applications.

Open OnDemand empowers students, researchers, and industry professionals with remote web access to supercomputers. From a client perspective, key features are that it requires zero installation (since it run entirely in a browser), is easy to use (via a simple interface), and is compatible with any device (even a mobile phone or tablet). From a system administrator perspective, key features are that it provides a low barrier to entry for users of all skill levels, is open source and has a large community behind it, and is configurable and flexible for user’s unique needs.

A key recent development is the Open OnDemand Appverse (openondemand.org/appverse), which provides a central and standardized location for the community to publish and share apps they have developed for Open OnDemand.

Who
This session is intended for HPC sysadmins, research computing staff, developers, and users interested in improving access to HPC systems and sharing Open OnDemand tips & tricks.

Open OnDemand is now in use at over 2,100 research computing service providers across the world. These include public and private academic institutions, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and private industries. Notable installations include: (1) Fugaku at Riken in Japan; (2) LUMI at CSC - Finland; (3) University of Cambridge; and (4) Do IT Now. The major commercial cloud providers (Amazon, Microsoft, and Google) have pre-configured Open OnDemand instances in their marketplaces.

Most of these organizations attend the ISC conferences. Evidence of this is that Open OnDemand has hosted BoFs at ISC in recent years which regularly have 75~100 attendees.

What
Many institutions face challenges in making HPC resources accessible to a broader range of users. This session addresses how different organizations are tackling these challenges using Open OnDemand.

While there is a Global Open OnDemand conference held in the United States of America each year, due to a variety of reasons, many people that attend ISC are unable to attend that conference each year. However there are numerous members of the Open OnDemand community that have valuable insights to share with the rest of the community and would appreciate the opportunity to have a forum such as this.

Hence, by providing a brief forum for flash talks, the organizers anticipate stimulating productive conversations amongst the community and helping to foster further engagements during and subsequent to ISC.

How
The session leaders, who are all part of the Open OnDemand development team, will solicit in advance of ISC from the Open OnDemand community proposals for flash talks. We anticipate being able to accommodate ~7 flash talks, each no more than 5 minutes in duration, while allowing for a few minutes for Q&A and transitions.

To help keep the audience engaged and involved throughout, we will utilize Mentimeter, which allows attendees to submit questions asynchronous and vote on each others’ questions.

We will publicize the schedule for the flash talks (including speakers and topics) in advance of ISC via our website and newsletter, as well as during ISC in the Open OnDemand booth in order to drive attendance at the event.

We will also post the talk slides on the Open OnDemand website and encourage people to continue discussions both in the Open OnDemand ISC exhibition booth and online at the Open OnDemand community hub (openondemand.org/hub). We also anticipate some of the presentations to involve Appverse contributions and will encourage the participants and community to utilize and build upon those.

Value
In addition to practical takeaways such as lessons learned and ideas to apply immediately, a key anticipated insight we hope for attendees is that they are part of a broad community that is extremely engaged with Open OnDemand. This event will foster additional interactions amongst the attendees in further of the overall mission of Open OnDemand to “Connect Computing Power with Powerful Minds”.
