Information

The goals of the BoF are 1) reveal the latest IO500 list and provide highlights and insight; 2) advertise the community hub but also discuss and steer the direction of the community effort and latest developments for the benefit of the community 3) to discuss important topics related to measuring and optimizing high-performance storage and its growing importance to efficient computation.

The BOF brings together I/O experts from academia and industry that include researchers/engineers working on high-performance I/O in data centers, storage system designers and architects for the leading HPC storage systems, as well as interested domain scientists and computer scientists interested in discussing high-performance I/O issues.

The community consists of users, vendors, developers and anyone that is passionate and interested in HPC Storage. Community member participation is extremely valuable and is critical to ensure the IO500 continues to deliver on its mission to benefit the HPC storage community and ensure there is a fair playing field for all participants and vendors. Everyone is encouraged to provide suggestions on all aspects of IO500, feedback on any changes and proposals, and generally help build a safe, inclusive, and supportive community. The IO500 benchmark has been developed together with the community and its development is still ongoing. Throughout the year, everyone is encouraged to join the mailing list and our Slack channel to discuss issues and participate, but the BoF is a critical part of getting the community members to exchange and discuss critical issues.

The IO500 BOF has been included in the ISC schedule since ISC17. The BOF enables us to be close to the community; sharing our status and exchanging opinions about the future direction of the IO500. Through the community’s feedback we announced the creation of production and research lists in order to have a more fair comparison between production and research systems. Moreover, we created the reproducibility report after discussion with the community to know which systems have specific characteristics that could enable reproducibility of submitted results. Finally, the BOF is well attended with average 50-70 attendees for each year.
