AI researchers in UK have long faced limited access to large-scale GPU resources, unlike their counterparts in other leading economies who leverage such infrastructure to accelerate their work. To bridge this gap and establish global AI leadership, the UK Government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan commits £900m to supercomputing infrastructure, with the AI Research Resource (AIRR) at its core. AIRR initially comprises two Top500-class systems, DAWN at the University of Cambridge and Isambard-AI at the University of Bristol. DAWN integrates Intel’s Ponte Vecchio GPUs and Sapphire Rapids CPUs, supporting multi-tenancy and cloud-native workflows for applications like large language models and climate simulations. Complementing DAWN, Isambard-AI leverages NVIDIA Grace-Hopper GPUs, optimised for GPU-intensive workloads. Together, these systems democratise access to cutting-edge AI resources, driving innovation in academia and industry. AIRR DAWN enables AI research through federated access, scalable infrastructure, and advanced hardware.
