Information
Brazil is currently host to nith computers in the Top500. While the petroleum industry has been the historical motivation for supercomputing in Brazil, with its workloads of seismic imaging. In 2015, Brazil took an important step towards increasing its competitiveness in HPC with the acquisition of the Santos Dumont (SDumont) supercomputer, installed at the National Scientific Computing Laboratory (LNCC), with the aim of establishing a shared infrastructure to support research at a national level. The most powerful computational partition of SDumont is ranked 89th, which classifies it as the most powerful supercomputer in Latin America focused on academic research. More recently, the exponential growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has elevated HPC to a new level of application, with significant impacts on the economy and society on a global scale. The Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Plan (PBIA) plans to upgrade the SDUmont and the HPC infrastructure to position Brazil as a global reference in innovation and efficiency in the use of AI, especially in the public sector. The PBIA establishes strategic guidelines to consolidate the country as a hub of excellence in science, technology and innovation, promoting the advancement of knowledge, economic development and a society better prepared for the challenges of the future.
